AVLS Space Forum: The Impact of Weightlessness/microgravity on Venous and Lymphatic Function #2

Learning Objectives:

• Upon completion, participant will be able to discuss the concept of weightlessness and "microgravity" in space travel and general implications for astronaut health (cardiovascular, bone, musculoskeletal, neurologic, radiation exposure, nutrition).
• Upon completion, participant will be able to discuss fluid shifts in weightlessness and impact upon SANS ( Spaceflight Associated Neuroocular Syndrome) and the SANS multi-hit theory (genetics/SNPs, nutrition, fluid shifts, elevated CO2, microvascular dysfunction, glymphatic) and the potential implications as a "spinoff understanding" to patients on terra firma.
• Upon completion, participant will be able to discuss the impact of weighlessness on arterial, venous and lymphatic and the theoretical implications for endothelial glycocalyx function and intravascular/interstitial/intracellula fluid shifts.
• Upon completion, participant will be able to discuss medical research performed in space flight analogues (earth bound, under the influence of gravity) and in the true weightlessness of LEO (Low Earth Orbit).
• Upon completion, participant will be able to discuss nutritional assessment and countermeasures for astronaut health with implications for how we can improve patient nutritional health ( sodium, hydration, fiber, micronutrients (vitamins D, C, B complex, zinc, Ca, ect), diosmin, flavonoids) and implications for dermal and gastrointestinal microbiome.
