Dr. Arthur Formanek is a staff anesthesiologist and intensivist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an Instructor in Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Formanek completed medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, anesthesiology residency at the University of Maryland, and Critical Care and Thoracic Surgery Anesthesiology fellowships at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
In the OR, Dr. Formanek specializes in neurosurgical and thoracic surgery anesthesiology. Dr. Formanek has authored chapters on regional anesthetic techniques for neurosurgery. In the ICU, Dr. Formanek primarily attends in the Thoracic Surgery ICU. His research interests include ventilation strategies in ARDS. Dr. Formanek has been recognized by his department with an Award in Excellence and has been awarded Attending of the Year by the residents.
Dr. Formanek has a strong interest in aerospace medicine and its corollaries with anesthesiology. He is currently developing transfusion methods for use in spaceflight and has patented an IV air trap designed to work in microgravity that will allow rapid transfusion in spaceflight and austere environments. He has worked on other projects with NASA including increased post-void residuals in spaceflight and risk of urosepsis. He is the current President of the Space Surgery Association within the Aerospace Medical Association.
Dr. Formanek is also a Major in the US Civil Air Patrol.
