Alan Hargens, PhD is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego. He served as Chief of the Space Physiology Branch at NASA Ames Research Center. He has edited 12 books and published more than 360 peer-reviewed articles and over 60 chapters. He has trained over 250 students, two of whom became NASA astronauts and one who is a Fulbright Scholar. His recent awards include the Nello Pace Award for Outstanding Leadership and Contributions to the Field of Gravitational Physiology. the Citation Award from the American College of Sports Medicine, the Distinguished Public Service Metal (NASA’s highest award), the Nicolas Andry Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (given for research and clinical progress in compartment syndromes and intracompartmental pressure measurement), the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research Founders Award, the highest honor given to a member of the Society for distinguished scientific contributions to and leadership in the field of gravitational research, the Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Society of Adaptive Medicine (given for distinguished scientific contributions to the field of adaptive medicine} and the distinguished and inaugural speaker for Charles M Tipton Lectureship, American College of Sports Medicine.
