Identification of Outcomes in Clinical Studies for Pelvic Venous Disease: A Scoping Review

Introduction, Objectives, and/or Purpose: There is increasing recognition that health systems need to measure and improve the value of patient care by measuring outcomes. The development of a core outcome set, defined as an agreed minimum set of outcomes that should be measured and reported in all clinical studies of a specific disease, aims to enhance the standardisation of care. As a first step in developing core outcomes for pelvic venous disease (PeVD), we aimed to generate a list of outcomes reported in previous PeVD treatment studies and classify them into domains and core areas.

Methods: Potential outcomes for consideration were sourced from MEDLINE and Embase searches. Clinical studies published between 2013-2023 reporting on interventions for PeVD were included. Closely related outcomes were classified into domains, and domains were grouped into three core areas: disease-specific, treatment-related, and quality of life outcomes.

Results: Of the 951 records identified, 43 publications were included, representing 43 distinct studies. A total of 64 outcome domains were identified; 21 (33%) disease-specific outcomes, 36 (56%) treatment-related outcomes, and 7 (11%) quality of life outcomes. Of the 43 studies included, disease-specific outcomes were identified in 39 (91%), treatment-related outcomes in 41 (95%) studies, and quality of life outcomes in 10 (23%) studies.

Conclusion(s): Most PeVD treatment studies evaluated disease-specific and treatment-related features of PeVD, but few studies reported outcomes that measured the impact on quality of life. These findings will inform the next steps in developing a core outcome set for PeVD treatment.
