Part 1: Increase knowledge about the negative impact of sedentary behaviour and obesity on lipoedema and lymphedema.
Create awareness about the importance of an integrated national approach to address lifestyle related issues.
Part 2: Medical concepts of lymphatic disease will be discussed including heart failure, constitutional lymphedema, genomics, inflammation and finding the cause of lymphedema.
Part 3: A review of both Innovative and Practical Concepts in Lymphedema will be discussed

Learning Objectives:

  • Part 1: A) Recognize the impact of lifestyle, obesity, and daily activity level or sedentary behaviors in patients with chronic diseases, and B) Understand the nutritional guidance for lymphedema and the relevance of engaging patients in their therapy plans.
  • Part 2: A) Understand the pathophysiology of the lymphatic system in patients with heart failure, B) Recognize physiological variations of the lymphatic system among people and the consequences, C) Outline the genomic approach to lymphedema via the St. George’s Algorithm, and D) Define the relationship between inflammation and lymph stasis and consequent adipose tissue proliferation with fibrosis. .
  • Part 3: A) Define the (patho)physiology of lymphatic preload, afterload, and contractility and how they assist in identifying the cause of lymphedema, B) Recognize the beneficial effects of bariatric surgery in the patient with obesity associated [phlebo]lymphedema, C) Outline the recent British Lymphology Guidelines in managing lymphedema associated cellulitis, D) Analyze the purported adverse outcomes and contraindications associated with a vaso pneumatic pump, E) Conceptualize lymphedema as a chronic disease and how that affects management, and F) Identify atypical causes of lower extremity lymphedema.
